About Me

For those of you who haven't heard from me since high school, I will try and fill you in on what I've been up to. Here goes: I went to college for a year, at the University of Kansas over in Lawrence, went to class for the 1st 3 weeks of each semester and then screwed off (usually involving large quantities of alcohol) for the rest of the semester. Came back to Cape for about 3 months, got bored and joined the Navy. I started out being a Nuclear Electronics Tech, but like 85% of the rest who start out, I got forced to be something else. My something else was a SONAR tech. All that means is that I fixed and operated the equipment that listens for submarines. While I was in, I lived in Orlando, San Diego, and eventually Jacksonville, FL. In my 6 years, I did 2 deployments on 2 ships. One was the USS Conolly and I did a Counter-Drug Op down in the Caribbean for 4 and 1/2 months. We would deploy my SONAR behind the ship and listened for speedboats that were headed for the US from South America. Mostly what I remember of it was drinking in a lot of island bars. We pulled in to port at St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico (a lot), Haiti, Cuba, Columbia, and the Bahamas. OH, and snorkeling off of Puerto Rico. After that, I went to the USS Philippine Sea, and did a 6 month Mediterranean deployment. For those of you who pay attention to current events and the national news, during this deployment, the US was trying to stop Slobodan Milosevic from killing a lot of Serbs in Kosovo. The Phil Sea was the ship that started the bombing. Port calls this time included Barcelona, about 9 different places in Italy, Crete, Israel, and Palma de Majorca. While I was in, I met the woman who would become my wife, Megan. We met at SONAR school (yep, she's a sailor, too,) and 5 months later we were married. Working on 14 years now. We ended up moving from San Diego. Before I got out, we had 2 beautiful kids, who are now 12 (Alexis) and 10 (Jonathan). After the Navy, I moved down to Miami, to work for Johnson & Johnson making Stents. That lasted about 9 months, as I hadn't quite matured enough to keep my mouth shut when my boss didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground (which was often). He informed me that a HR investigation, that I asked for, determined that I was no longer needed. Funny how that works, huh? I then started looking in to computers, and started working in the IT dept. at the Miami-Dade Housing Agency. Loved the work, but was about fed up with Miami (great place to visit, but a horrible place to live.) Luckily, I got a job offer from a Navy contractor to come back to Jacksonville, and fix the same systems that I worked on as a sailor. So we came back. Been back here for about 5 years and hopefully we'll never leave. I did the Navy contracting for about 4 years and the contract ended. Did some satellite TV installation, some truck driving (saw the whole country in about 8 months,) and then, finally, I was back at Johnson & Johnson here in Jacksonville, making contacts. UPDATE:I am not working at J&J anymore. I am using my time now to go back to school and get my degree since the economy sucks and there aren't any companies hiring right now. My wife finished her Bachelors in Biology in December 2008 and is now teaching 6th grade science. Between her full time job, and my GI Bill benefits, I am currently a full time student / house husband.
